We’re All Performing a Version of Our Lives

He lovingly paints immigrants, praises free trade and diplomacy, and rues the coarsening of American politics. Why won’t he talk about Donald Trump?

I caught myself doing it the other day.

Mid-conversation. Mid-sentence, actually.

Saying something that sounded like me… but didn’t quite feel like me.

Not a lie. Not even something untrue.

Just slightly edited.

Softer. More acceptable. A little more… polished.

And it made me pause.

Because if I was doing it so effortlessly—without even thinking—how often was I doing it everywhere else?

The Version We Show vs The Version We Live

We all have versions of ourselves.

The one we are at home. The one we are in public. The one we are with friends. The one we present online.

And to some extent, that’s normal.

We adapt. We adjust. We read the room.

But somewhere along the way, that adjustment becomes performance.

Subtle. Constant. Almost invisible.

It Doesn’t Start As Pretending

It starts as fitting in.

You say things that are easier to agree with. You downplay things that feel too much. You present a version of your life that’s easier to explain.

You don’t lie.

You just… edit.

And over time, those edits become habit.

The Pressure to Have It Together

There’s also an unspoken expectation now that we should look like we’re handling life well.

Not perfectly. But convincingly.

You can admit to being “a bit stressed.” You can joke about being tired.

But there’s a line.

Beyond that, it becomes uncomfortable—for other people, and for you.

So you learn where that line is.

And you stay just within it.

Social Media Just Made It Louder

Let’s be honest—this didn’t start with social media.

But it definitely amplified it.

Because now, there’s a constant opportunity to present your life.

To curate moments. To frame things a certain way. To show the highlights—and quietly leave out the rest.

And even if you’re not trying to impress anyone, you’re still… aware.

Aware of how things look. Aware of how they’ll be perceived.

And that awareness changes how you show up.

The Exhaustion No One Talks About

Here’s the part we don’t say out loud:

It’s tiring.

Not physically. But mentally.

Constantly filtering yourself. Adjusting tone. Editing reactions.

Making sure you’re not too much—but also not too distant.

It’s a lot to carry.

Especially when you don’t even realise you’re doing it.

So What Happens To The Real Version?

Nothing dramatic.

It doesn’t disappear.

It just gets… quieter.

You still have your real thoughts. Your real reactions. Your real preferences.

You just don’t always express them.

And slowly, you get more comfortable being the version that’s easier for others to receive.

The Small Moments That Break Through

But every now and then, something shifts.

You say exactly what you think—without softening it. You react honestly—without adjusting it. You show up as you are—without rehearsing it.

And it feels… different.

Lighter. Simpler. More like you.

Real Moment of the Week

Saying “no” to something I would normally agree to—just to avoid explaining myself.

No long justification. No overthinking it later.

Just a simple, honest no.

And sitting with that discomfort… without fixing it.

Where I’m Landing With This

I don’t think we can—or even should—stop adapting completely.

That’s part of being human.

But maybe the goal isn’t to perform less.

Maybe it’s to notice when we are.

To catch those moments where we’re slightly editing ourselves.

And gently ask:

Is this necessary? Or just habitual?

Because Maybe We’re Not Meant To Be So Edited

Maybe we’re allowed to be:

  • a little more direct
  • a little less polished
  • a little more… ourselves

Not in a dramatic, rebellious way.

But in small, honest ways.

The kind that don’t need approval.

Because At The End Of The Day

The version of you that feels the easiest to be—

That’s the one worth holding on to.

Still becoming. And a little less edited each time.
