The Version of Success We’re Still Chasing (And Why)

He lovingly paints immigrants, praises free trade and diplomacy, and rues the coarsening of American politics. Why won’t he talk about Donald Trump?

I realised something uncomfortable recently.

A lot of what I still think of as “success”… doesn’t actually belong to me.

The Blueprint We Never Questioned

It was given to us early.

Study hard. Do well. Build something respectable. Look a certain way. Live a certain kind of life.

And without even realising it, we absorb it.

Not consciously.

Just… consistently.

So We Keep Chasing It

Even when our lives look different now.

Even when our priorities have shifted.

Even when we say we want something else.

There’s still a part of us measuring our lives against that old blueprint.

What It Looks Like Now

It’s subtle.

Comparing timelines. Questioning if we’ve done enough. Feeling slightly behind—even when we’re not.

Looking at someone else’s life and wondering if we should want that too.

The Problem Isn’t Ambition

Wanting more isn’t the issue.

Growth isn’t the issue.

The issue is chasing something you haven’t consciously chosen.

Because Then It Never Feels Like Enough

You achieve something… and immediately adjust the goalpost.

You get there… and it feels underwhelming.

Because it wasn’t fully yours to begin with.

The Shift I’m Trying to Make

Asking a slightly uncomfortable question:

Do I actually want this?

Not because it looks good. Not because it’s expected. Not because it makes sense.

But because it feels aligned with my life now.

And Sometimes, the Answer Is No

And that’s the hardest part.

Letting go of goals that sound impressive.

Choosing things that feel quieter… but more real.

Real Moment of the Week

Catching myself comparing my timeline to someone else’s…

and then asking:

“If no one was watching, would I still want this?”

The answer changed everything.

Because Success Might Look Different Now

Less visible. Less defined. Less… performative.

But more sustainable. More personal. More yours.

Where I’m Landing With This

I’m not trying to lower my standards.

I’m trying to redefine them.

On my terms.

For this phase of life.

Still becoming. And redefining what “enough” looks like for me.
